Barcelona scouting Croatian star as Lautaro Martinez backup

According to AS, Barcelona are scouting Dinamo Zagreb’s Bruno Petkovic, in case they are unable to land first choice target Lautaro Martinez.

The 25-year-old striker has burst onto the international scene with Croatia this year. Having made his debut only in March, he already has 5 goals in just 8 caps.
Barcelona have been monitoring several forwards as potential long-term replacements for Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan star will be turning 33 in January, and the Catalans have no traditional number 9 to take over from him.
Lautaro Martinez will still be the first choice. The Argentine national has been brilliant ever since he arrived in Europe last year, and has formed a productive partnership with Romelu Lukaku at Inter Milan this season.
But Martinez will be hard to pry away from Antonio Conte, and he certainly won’t come cheap. PSV’s Donyel Malen and AC Milan’s Rafael Leao are other options being monitored.
Barcelona have been too dependent on Messi and Suarez for scoring goals this season, and another young, proven goalscorer could help take the burden off of them.
The Blaugrana could also use some extra legs in attack going into the business end of the season, with Ousmane Dembele too injury prone and Griezmann struggling to live up to his price tag.
Petkovic’s positioning, dribbling and pace have been invaluable to Zagreb and Croatia in recent months. He’s also has a low enough profile right now for Barca to sign him on a much cheaper price than their other targets in January.
Touted as Croatia’s heir to Mario Mandzukic, Petkovic could become a household name in the near future, and a move to Barca could work wonders for his career as well, especially if he can break into the first team and take over from Suarez.
Although Barca are at the top of LaLiga right now, they’ve already lost 3 matches this season, with Real and Atletico breathing down their necks. Ernesto Valverde is under a lot of pressure, and could lose his job if performances don’t improve soon.
